A police task force composed of officers from Ontario and Quebec as well as the United States Department of the Interior has arrested 14 people in Montreal in connection with a fraud ring that specialized in a “grandparent scam.”
Members of the fraud ring “pretended to be police or lawyers who were holding the grandchild or family member (of the victim) and demanded money from the victims to bail out their family member,” according to a statement by the Ontario Provincial Police.

On April 10, the OPP warned news media that an “increased presence” of Ontario and Quebec police would be visible in Montreal and Laval because of a combined operation.
That operation, dubbed “Sharp,” between Jan. 22 and April 8 identified 126 victims of the scam ring who suffered losses of about $739,000.
More than a dozen of the victims were repeatedly victimized and lost more than $243,000, police said.
Operation Sharp involved the OPP, Sûreté du Québec, Peel Regional Police and the police forces of Montreal, Laval, Toronto, York, Hamilton and Ottawa.
